I just got an email from Wolfgang's Vault saying that this TPATH show was just posted this week. Apologies if this has already been posted, but I haven't seen this one yet.

I was just going to mention this. I'm stoked-- it has the eariest version of Refugee I've heard so far. And a a live version of Casa Dega.

OK, this is the show where Tom gets pulled offstage by an overly-enthusastic fan.

Ok so now we can obviously (and I think it was mentioned here before) establish a relationship between the Winterland shows and the Wolfgang's vault people and yes this is the infamous show where TP takes a nose dive into the crowd.

It features among other things the true debut of "Refugee" and "Casa Dega" (both available previously from the following night in Santa Monica) and the debut of "Even The Losers" in the encore.

"Making Love" if its anything like the performance the following night should also be a standout as it was never performed again to my knowledge outside this brief tour and is a fine cover tune.

Besides all that of course this show has never appeared previously either via sbd or aud. So yeah this is a very welcome surprise.

While singing to TPATH, "Quiet Mommy, I'm trying to listen to Thomas." Brett, age 5.
After listening to a Mudcrutch show I asked Brett what she thought about the new Mudcrutch music. Her response: "It's great. I didn't know it would be so thrilling." Brett, age 6.
"All right, now we're at the part of the show that we just go rip roarin crazy. Are you ready to go rip roarin crazy with me?" Tom Petty 6/28/03 Summerfest

Wow!

They recorded Refugee like 100 times in the studio trying to get the perfect take.

I'm wondering if they got that take before or after this Winterland show.

This early version of Refugee (and the next night in Santa Monica) lacks the drum lead-in by Stan, and is missing Mike's signature riff before the vocals start. Those 100 takes must have come later as the song became more polished.

By the way, I've got this show captured and burned to 2 CD's. If we want to start up a tree of some kind, I'll send the first 5 or so out, and we can distribute further from there. Let me know... Wink

^Did you track it, edit out the pauses between songs and the digital skips? or did you just capture it and burn it to cd?

Sorry - yes, I've edited out all of the gaps and separated the tracks. I also separated the Bill Graham intro and outro into their own tracks, so there are a total of 20 - 10 on each CD. I'll listen through it again today to make sure it's as clean as I want it.

WOW, what a great performance and recording! This one surprised me too, they talk about this show (for the Petty/crowd interaction) but I had no idea there was a good quality recording of it. Makes you wonder why the band/label didn't release this (and all the other high/decent quality TPATH concert recordings). I'm very glad Wolfgang's Vault made it available now though.

It is interesting to hear the early versions of these songs, some of which preceded the "Damn the Torpedoes" album's release by nearly a year. "Even the Losers" is another example, somewhat different from the album version. I'd say the album version is arguably "better" but this version is still enjoyable and interesting; awesome to be able to hear it as an alternate or "work in progress" version.
