< can't decide if I should go up to KC for the baseball game tomorrow or stay home and clean.
< also worrying about the spouse driving "my" vehicle up there. last time we went to a Chiefs game he backed "my" vehicle into someone when he got pissed (we were only waiting 2 hours to get out of the parking lot). we are taking a couple of my son's friends with us so we need to take my SUV. I hate my husband's driving.

^^ no, check it out. My bank is in serious trouble. Our CEO quit unexpectedly, they hired the CEO from Charter One, they froze our pensions/401Ks, they're cutting half the banker positions (I had to reinterview for my own job this past Tuesday), they axed 16 mortgage originators yesterday, they've cut part time employees from 15 hours / week to 8 hours a week (which means I'll be doing sales, service, AND running a teller window), and here's the clincher... this is a post from the shareholder bbs (FMER is the ticker symbol for FirstMerit)....

It's no coincidence that John Cochran was fired less that 30 days after the recent FMER Shareholder Meeting. I've attended dozens of shareholder meetings in the last 20 years and rarely have I ever witnessed such shareholder discontent. The Board had no choice but to get rid of Cochran. However, the Board is not without blame here. It slept for five years while the bank's stock price did nothing.

Unfortunately, Cochran and his management team will cost FMER shareholders several million additional dollars over the next few weeks as new CEO Greig settles outstanding criminal and civil litigation that occurred during the last few years of Cochran's tenure (see Larry D. Jones' federal bank fraud indictment of 3/31/06) before any turnaround can proceed. In addition, almost the entire senior management team of Cochran will have to be replaced, along with the outside audit firm.

Most likely, the Board has given Greig a mandate to turnaround the bank and prepare it for sale. However, there are no quick fixes in an industry facing higher interest rates, margin compression and continued flattening of the Yield Curve. Any sale is probably 2 years away.

As for the litigation, Larry Jones, a long time member of the First Merit Community Advisory Board and buddy of Cochran, was charged with 39 counts of bank fraud in a 3/31/06 federal indictment. Jones, through his company, Erie Shores Computer, ran a multi-million dollar kiting/money laundering scheme that victimized three local banks - First Merit, National City and Huntington. Later this summer, the Cleveland U.S. attorney is expected to file an expanded indictment against Mr. Jones for bank fraud, wire fraud and obstruction. The expanded indictment will also charge no less than seven current or former First Merit employees with covering-up Jones' criminal activity, which included stealing $1.3 million from local company Star Beverage, a First Merit client. The next shoe figures to drop by mid-summer.

It is a joke that Cochran was given such a handsome exit package given the millions that Greig will be paying out this summer to settle all outstanding litigation.

A source tells me that Investigative Reporter John Caniglia of the Cleveland Plain Dealer will soon run a lengthy story about Larry Jones and his numerous criminal activities.

Doncha just LOVE it when people in a position of power abuse their power for their own gain? It's people like me who pay...
