dutchess, my mother-in-law has brittle bones too. Her Dr. recommended: exercise of walking up to 5 miles daily on level surface, mild weight bearing exercise, calcium + vitamin D. She exercises best if someone goes with her for moral support & to spot her in case she falls. Once she goe started exercising, she felt more fit and even enjoyed it. (...just my experience)
