A friend from the Bay area saw Alison Kraus and Robert Plant perform live last night and he mentioned they covered the Mudcrutch song Shady Grove. Keeping the music alive.

Was reminded that this performance was held at a free concert in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Last night, 10/4/08 at The Strictly Bluegrass Festival, sponsored by a single individual who loves the Blues and Bluegrass. No corporate sponsorship.

Actually it is the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. This free concert has been held for the last 8 or so years. I think they used to call it Strictly Bluegrass but for some reason expanded it with the Hardly.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

In addition to Alison Kraus and Robert Plant, Nick Lowe played, so did Emmylou Harris. And Heavy Trash. Ok, I don't know who Heavy Trash is, I just liked the name.

^Thanks for the correction Gatorlily. I was only given the title by the friend who attended the event. He added some nice commentary to the song that should be shared:

As I understand it, "Shady Grove" is a "traditional" Bluegrass instrumental song. It could be that nobody quite knows who wrote it, but various people have written lyrics for it including, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, Doc Watson, and of course, Mudcrutch, which vary slightly from version to version. Garcia/Grisman may have been the first to write lyrics for it, but I'm not sure about that. I'm not sure who's lyrics Alison Krauss and Robert Plant used at the concert.

^That is odd.

We were talking about this song before we heard it trying to figure out what we might hear.

We were thinking Doc Watson.

No one knows who wrote folk songs. They are songs that are passed down, like stories.

Someone close to you loved their music so much they borrowed it? Smile

Folk songs are so amazing in that they are written and re-written by each generation of singers. As for 'Shady Grove' one might imagine each new singer adding their own interpretation to what a shady grove might symbolize to them. Very cool that the song has come back to life through Mudcrutch and Kraus/Plant.

WTF - MC Hammer at a bluegrass festival...that's funny. It says from 10:30 to noon was a "special education program"...hmmm....

With the new release of the Mudcrutch live stuff I got to thinking more about the song 'Shady Grove'. So, did some searching. Ironically, today the song is also featured on a website called The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor.

The Writer's Almanac 10/16/2008

Shady Grove

Peaches in the summertime,
Apples in the fall,
If I can't get the girl I love,
Won't have none at all.

Wish I had a banjo string
Made of golden twine,
And every tune I'd pick on it —
Is 'I wish that girl were mine.'

Fly around, my blue-eyed girl,
Fly around, my daisy,
Fly around, my blue-eyed girl,
Nearly drive me crazy.

Shady grove, my true love,
Shady grove I know,
Shady grove, my true love,
I'm bound for the shady grove.

Shady Grove ~ Wikipedia

I also didn't realize that 'Shady Grove' was referring to a woman's name either. Or that it was musically related to one of the old English Child Ballads called Matty Grove.
