Petty and pals are solid as Mudcrutch

So this group really could have made it.

Actually, 60 percent of the 1970s rock band Mudcrutch did make it -- selling more than 50 million records and earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

With apologies to Thomas Wolfe, Petty proves that you can go home again with this long-delayed debut by his pre-Heartbreakers outfit. Recorded live over 10 days, with no overdubs at all, these 14 studio tracks channel the happy, organic spirit of the Traveling Wilburys.

With Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench on guitars and keyboards, respectively, and a fistful of new Petty songs, it's not surprising that this is a solid effort. Not everything rises to the high standard of Petty's formidable catalog, but there's not a stinker in the bunch.

The most appealing aspect is the easygoing mood, established out of the gate with a rollicking acoustic run through the old standard "Shady Grove." It's a nice showcase for the talents of the two returning Mudcrutch alumni, singer Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh.

Leadon's tenor, smoother and less idiosyncratic than Petty's, is exceptional in the harmony role he plays on "Shady Grove." As a lead singer, however, he's less interesting on songs such as his own "Queen of the Go-Go Girls." On drums, Marsh is steady on the shuffling backbeat that falls somewhere between country and rock.

About five of the new Petty songs are legitimate keepers, especially the expansive "Scare Easy" and the twangy post-Katrina ballad "Orphan of the Storm." That song, about an evacuee in Houston with emotional baggage, is an inspired union of guitars, voices and a well-constructed chorus.

"The Wrong Thing to Do," with a vocal stylistically reminiscent of "You Don't Know How It Feels," takes a grittier approach and features some nice rock 'n' roll wordplay: "She was blond and tall/ She was 23/ Born into the world to get the best of me."

The songwriting duty is spread around, with Tench taking a rare vocal turn on his "This Is a Good Street." Built on a simple keyboard riff, it's about a street that's good because an unfaithful lover no longer lives there.

As a side project, Mudcrutch also is a good one. It's no Traveling Wilburys, but it's not bad.
