My mom says she believes she hung out with Tom Petty one night, and I wanted to see if this story made sense to anyone that might know. Back when she was about 20 years old (30 years ago), she and her friend went to Krispy Kreme off of 13th Street (441) in Gainesville, FL. After exiting, they thought it would be fun to hitch a ride. A man (presumably Tom Petty) picked them up, and took them back to a place with a few trailers, which he said was a recording studio. I can't remember if she said they spent the night or not, but "Tom" said that they should have been careful, as there's some pretty sick people out there. I'm sure if my mom wasn't high at the time she might have remembered things better, but that was the 70s. So, does any of this make sense, as far as the recording studio goes, and perhaps Tom can back this up if he lurks around here? I've always been curious to the truth of her story.
Tom must have been quite the "Mannerly Southern Gent" back in his day. All these pick ups, dates, etc....and he never makes a move on any of the girls.

Geez, lucky you, Dustin. My mother never told me any stories like this... these are the kinds of stories that are so heart-warming and inspirational to one's children.. That's certainly one to write up and put in the time capsule..
My mom likes Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. One time she asked to borrow my DVD I have. Then she did. So I gave her permission to do that. She gave it to me when she was finished with it. So, I think getting a DVD for me is cool. Do you have a DVD?
I borrow mine from the video store. But, Meta, its definately cool to get "toys" that you parent or parents like to play with. Once when I was in college, I got my roommate a present for her birthday. We were always squabbling over who got to play with it more...then it got more mundane. We were always tussling over who got possession...and then who got to hold it the longest. Its amazing we got any studying done!

Oh dang, but wouldn't that be nice? I don't know how many of you agree, but just to have Tom Petty or one of the band members reply to one of these threads one of these days would make me fall right outta my seat.
------------------------------ Socialites are just kids who haven't heard of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
I could be wrong but I would guess that it would be fun for them to read some of this stuff- especially since it is, after all, their personal website - which leads me to ask Does anyone know what is Jeff doing these days? Jeff Lynne, that is. Besides, uhh, excuse me, producing the new one... Jeff, Jet- setting around the world.
Eep! Sorry for going into hiding. Well, I'm pretty sure Krispy Kreme was there.. it's like one of the originals, and if you look at it, it shows its age. I doubt my mom would make up a story - she's a very honest woman. I guess we'll never know, unless someday Tom responds.
Well Steph, I guess that kinda puts that question to rest. We can only thank you for helping to solve life's little mysteries.
You know, my dog has not been acting right. She seems a bit skitish, has a funny expression...and doesn't seem to be shedding as much. I wonder if maybe Tom recently picked her up? Maybe took her out for a couple chewies and a few good rubbies?

Sorry for running off for several months!. Are you serious about him referencing my mom at a concert? That would be pretty cool...
I went to the same high school as Tom Petty (Gainesville High School), but just a few years afterwards. I think they have a yearbook on file with his picture in it still.
Welcome back, DustinT. (Where ya been? huh? huh? ) Can still see his yearbook? That's pretty amazing. Its difficult to get ahold of other band member's yearbooks.

For what it's worth...Krispy Kreme had a number of locations throughout the SE part of the US in the 70's. (The company was actually founded in 1937.) I love doughtnuts.
