I went to the Prudential Center show last month in Newark...albeit it was a shorter show it was pretty good.

It was the first time I'd seen Petty since his tour before the Last DJ...

Well, I just got hold of a bootleg from Gainesville in 1993 with Stan Lynch...

My God...Petty's live show has lost alot since then...

Steve Ferrone is a fantastic drummer...but he's a hired gun guy type of player. He doesn't play with the soul of a real band member...it's a shame because I reallly think TP did a disservice not getting someone that really understood the nuances of his music. It seems Steve just goes through the motions completely soul-less.

Stan Lynch has been an incredible loss to the Heartbreakers...immeasurable...

Amazing what a difference...

I'd love to see a movement to drive TP to embrace a Lynch return.

I agree with you 100%. Stan's drumming was tremendously creative and "just right" for this band, IMO. Not to mention his backing vocals were quite important to the band's sound. Stan I think viewed TPATH as "his" band as much as Tom's, and I feel he really poured himself into making the music what it was, as if it was his child or whatever. Steve can play whatever he's asked/told to play, flawlessly, but I find his drumming very mechanical, and frankly I don't think he really "gets" the Heartbreakers' music. He just seems to have no "feel" for it, is about the best way I can describe it - his drumming is way too bass-drum heavy, not very creative, and too much "on beat", whereas Stan would play around the beat, leaving more room for the other band members to be heard.

When Howie replaced Ron, that transition seemed to work much better, possibly because Howie was a big fan of the Heartbreakers' music long before he was asked to join. And frankly I think the drum position is much more important than the bass role (no offense to bass players, and that IS an important role too). I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that to a pro/hired hand like Steve - who's backed Eric Clapton and George Harrison - this is just another "gig", albeit a long term one. Sign me up for that "Draft Stan" movement. This band is nowhere near what it was with him as a member, IMO.

I agree! The drums from the Stan era sound so much more powerful, as much an instrument making the song as the guitars and keyboards (as opposed to drums that keep the beat).

So sad Stan had to leave. I don't feel anyone really knows the reason why things like this happen but they do. I love listening to the recordings he is on.

I enjoy Steve Ferrone immensely though.

Off subject but who is the person who comes up to the stage with Winwood during the Heartbreakers set playing percussion?

Stan left cause he is a rocking Mofo, and the TP songs in 94 were causing him to have indigestion.
He might come back now if they would kiss and make up.
Won't happen, TP is too proud, Stan is too Proud. Nobody would ever be the first to call.

This Steve guy is a session guy. Never fit. Never will fit. Looks bored, never seen him work up a sweat.
Or get Dave Grohl. I could live with that!!

I think David is quite happy with his accomplishments in a little band called the Foo Fighters.

I disagree. Stan was good, but production-wise, he had a wonky, muddy, ill defined snare drum sound which wasn't straightened out til Rubin did Mary Jane, and then it was too late. Steve's much tighter, but the material is simply much more mid tempo - less to work up a sweat over.

Just an opinion - nothing to get too worked up over.

I think Ferrone (sp?) is great. He kicks it on the "Concert For George" DVD.

Stan was wondeful on drums AND on vocals. But that was then, and this is now. The Heartbreakers sound and style has changed over time, partly due to changes in their line up, and partly due to Tom's writing and singing style evolving.

I love the earlier albums, but you can't make the same album over and over. I think Steve's playing and drum sound are snappy and energetic, but not too tight or in your face.

Each drummer has a different style and brings something different to the table. In Stan's case, he would usually play behind the beat and give the songs a little more of a groove. Ferrone always plays on beat and makes the songs tighter. One isn't better than the other. They're just different.

hello CD listeners, we have come to the point on this album where those listening on cassette or records will have to stand up or sit down and turn over record or tape. In fairness to those listeners we will now take a few seconds before we begin side two... Thank you... Here's side two - tom petty, 1989

Although you can always figure out ways to come up with new material with the same basic style, I'm glad things change. I'm glad for Wildflowers, I'm glad Tom doesn't stay on the same page.

Stan's drumming was incredible, much more of a swing to it (I loved the way he'd use the crash symbol half a measure after you'd expect it), but things change, and in my opinion, not necessarily for the worse.

I personally cant tell the difference.

For the one who said that Ferrone has no soul or effort.... BULLSHIT!

Last year on tour, Ferrone was hitting the drums so hard and also, I have his drum stick from 2005 and there are chunks missing because he was drumming with such intensity!

It might be technology but Ive stated many times that the drumming in Wildflowers, Shes the One and Echo is way crisper and cleaner than at any other time in the history of the Heartbreakers!

Cheers all, and GO FERRONE!

WHO IS STAN???

In my view Tom's music needs very straight drums with only very few breaks, loops or accents - and that is exactly the way Steve is drumming!
He is absolutely cool and fits perfectly to the way Tom is playing his music now.
Nevertheless I liked Stan's sound and he seems to be a brilliant person, as far as I can tell by watching "Running down a Dream".
