Echo IS a damn good album.

Does your favorite album change from time to time? Mine does. Right now it's Echo and You're Gonna Get It in heavy rotation. Echo surprises me sometimes, how much I love it - it took a while for it to get under my skin.

Kelly,

Oh, absolutely! I could never choose just one album by any of my favorite artists, especially Tom Petty. It would be like choosing your favorite child! It's wrong! But, I will, at times, favor one album over all others often because of current personal circumstances or particular experiences or whatever. I think because so many of his songs are open to interpretation you can count on finding personal comfort and/or support somewhere in his vast repertoire. And the emotional resonance in Tom's music...love, defiance, determination, resignation, optimism, sadness........is universal. That's why we love him Wink because he real, he's sincere, and he's one of us Big Grin

I'm gonna go out on a limb here... I don't persay have a favorite as many of you have said but I'll go one by one and see what I like about all of them!

TPHB- it's their first and you can tell but it doesn't take away from the quality... Besides Breakdown I think Side 2 (yes SIDE 2 that means I have it on record) is the best part of the album. Strangered in the Night-Luna-American Girl. Great way to end the record... it get all serious and slightly dark then they finish with a bang.

YGGI- Not at the top of my list but some great classics come from here. Have to be in the mood to listen straight through for me but still great... Magnolia-Too Much Ain't Enough-I Need to Know- Listen to Her Heart these are a great combination gets the album rocking and you have to flip the record over to get two of them (yes another record)

DTT- Weird story with this one I was actually in Louisiana when I got this album so Louisiana Rain makes me think of when I was down there... Love Love Love this album you can put it on and listen striaght through the whole thing. Can't say enough about this album.

HP- Has a good mix of what EVERYONE knows and what FANS know... love The Waiting of course, Nightwatchman, Insider and Something big are a good example of the mix. Also Kings Road is a good upbeat rocking song. Think many forget about this album but it's a good one if you want off the beaten path from the band (and yes it's on record too!)

LAD- Album just like DTT. A play through album not a dull spot in it... All the songs get you going and can change your mood in an instant. Top 5 album also one that doesn't get the credit it deserves. Also isn't played enough by the band dark album but also a great album!

SA- Started as a Solo album for those who don't know like the sound like how there's a few different components to it has great classics Rebels, Don't Come Around Here No More and Southern Accents. Good to throw this one in from time to time.

That's the first half.... I'll let you guys read that and get the second have of my thoughts (not like it matters anyway) a little later after midmorning nap time

"I'm runnin down a dream. That never would come to me. Workin on a mystery. Goin wherever it leads. I'm runnin down a dream."

Beautifully said, little nel! You articulate the emotional power of his music so well.

I love them all but my favorite is Damn the Torpedoes, followed by Long After Dark, Wildflowers, Southern Accents. I also really like the Playback box set. I enjoy hearing stuff that was never released or B sides. Really like Casa Dega and Trailer off Playback.

Is The Last DJ anyone's favorite yet? I have to listen to it some more.

My favorites are Full Moon Fever, Damn the Torpedoes, Wildflowers, and Echo. Usually I've got one of these that I'm listening to more than the others, it changes once in awhile but its usually one of those. I also like my Anthology too since I can listen to lots of great songs all at the same time. Smile

that's pretty cool Stephanie, I used those lyrics (Mind with a Heart..) on my aol profile for eons..

ShesAnAmericanGirl & MyseteryMan,
"Damn the Torpedoes" is AWESOME..
I guess I am most attached to "Full Moon Fever", cos it was the very first (tape) I bought back then from Petty, and literally under 5 months later, I bought almost his whole collection from before then...

I think Full Moon Fever is a great "introductory" album because, by virtue of being uncluttered with instrumentation, it's easy to hear and understand TP's voice. All the lyrics are clear on the first listen, the melodies are great, the instrumentation is light and tasteful.

But I do agree that it's an overrated album. When it first came out, it became my second favorite after Damn the Torpedoes. But for me it doesn't stand the test of repeated listening quite as well as some of the other albums. For example the "Let Me Up" album was the album before FMF, and while Let Me Up doesn't grab the listener as immediately as FMF, I can listen to it numerous times without getting bored. With FMF, it sounds great but it's all up front, all right there immediately. The other albums such as Let Me Up seem more dense, more layered, compared with the clean & lite FMF. Probably this is due to FMF being a "solo" album while Let Me Up is a "band" album.

I like both types of albums, but for my ears the "band" albums were better for repeated listening than the solo albums. Even in concert, I thought some of the FMF albums sounded better with input from the rest of the band. For example, on "Free Fallin", sometimes Benmont has added a piano part that sounds just great on it. On the album, there's no piano part on that song. I'm assuming Ben just added that as he saw fit, rather than TP thinking of it later, though one never knows. But that's what happens when you had the band playing songs off of TP's solo album, the two entities are not exactly the same, so the band's take on FMF was not identical to the album. At any rate, I loved FMF when it was new, and I'd encourage anyone who doesn't know TP's music to listen to that album first. But without the full band, it's clean simplicity makes it one that I play less often than the others, over time.

Full Moon Fever is a Pop/Rock Masterpiece. AND... I think it might prove to be one of the most important records for TPaTH and their longevity. It is not my favorite, but I believe that on this record Tom realy expanded within himself as a songwriter... and by that I mean began a journey that is still in it's infancy. I believe the success of that venture removed any sort of restraint that might have been building in Tom with the Heartbreakers... and because TPaTH survived all of the ego manueverings around the solo success of Tom they are a much stronger band... and Tom discovered that they are soooo much better together... Sadly we lost Stan in the process, but he was gonna go sooner or later and strike out on his own... in my mind anyways. I think because of FMF... we have the band we have today... because once you make that hugely popular POP masterpiece and sell a bazillion records... you don't have to keep chasing it... you can just please yourself... Cool
