No, I think Tom got The Waiting from some woman that was holding out on him! LMAO!!!
While singing to TPATH, "Quiet Mommy, I'm trying to listen to Thomas." Brett, age 5. After listening to a Mudcrutch show I asked Brett what she thought about the new Mudcrutch music. Her response: "It's great. I didn't know it would be so thrilling." Brett, age 6. "All right, now we're at the part of the show that we just go rip roarin crazy. Are you ready to go rip roarin crazy with me?" Tom Petty 6/28/03 Summerfest Baby, those few hours linger on in my head forever...

Roger McGuinn Believes Tom got that line from him. However the way Tom describes writing that song, playing that riff over and over again for weeks, knowing it was going to be a great song, Waiting for it to finish, Waiting for the lyrics to come, Yeah The Waiting was the hardest part.

He said in Playback it was inspired by something Janis Joplin said in a magazine: "I love being on stage, and everything else is just waiting."
"I want Michael to do this song. This is a dance craze that's sweepin' my brain, you know...uh [pause]...I have dance crazes that occasionally sweep my brain." - Tom Petty, 4-11-99.
