I really like for my band to start playing Jammin Me but the references are way out of date.
So I've a few questions and a challenge for everyone. 1. Has anyone heard TPATH do Jammin Me lately and do they change the lyrics? 2.If they do change the lyrics, what do they change them to? 3. Do you think it's something that shouldn't be messed with? Those are the questions, now for the challenge. If you were going to change the lyrics to "update" them, what would you change and to what? I'm at the age now where if someone says they have acid, I assume they're talking about reflux. |

Play it as it stands.
Unless you plan on doing a parody I'd leave it alone. Let it rock as it does. |

^ I would agree.

I kind of like how the lyrics are sort of a scrapbook of the time that they were written in. Leave it. Less work for you, too.

I dunno, I'm kinda with Iffybiz. When the band opened with "Jammin' Me" in '99 they didn't change it, and it did sound a little bit odd: yeah, stick it to Joe Piscapo! ??? I think most of the other references, barring maybe El Salvador, fit pretty well for today. I'd just change the names.
"Take back Oprah Winfrey She has a daytime T.V. show Take back Paris Hilton Give 'em all some place to go..." Lol. I dunno. Throw in whoever you wanna slam. "I want Michael to do this song. This is a dance craze that's sweepin' my brain, you know...uh [pause]...I have dance crazes that occasionally sweep my brain." - Tom Petty, 4-11-99. |

Iffy: My (forming) band has had the same discussion. As Hungry Poet points out, the "Joe Piscapo" reference is the one most people go "wtf?" about. We've reached no conclusion nor come up with alternate lyrics, although I like HP's.

I really like your name, LOL.
And...I think Tom has kept the lyrics the same all these years. |

Thanks. Love yours, too. Yeah, well "Benmont" is as cool a name as there is, so I figured just flip it around -- plus I can remember it among all my logins and passwords and stuff that we all have these days.
Another option we talked about on "Jammin Me" is to start it off and yell to the audience, "Anybody out there remember 1987?!..." Set the context, as it were. |

That sounds really cool...I could picture a band doing that and everyone cheering.

ha ha ha That's great! Can anyone think of anymore? ************************************** Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits (Bo Diddley) |

I was thinking stuff like adding "health" to the "insurance" line or
"take back HDTV just let my TV bleed". Paris Hilton seems like a natural fit to send up. BTW, the band played last night and the owner was asking us to come back after the first set. Things are looking up. Tom Petty is still big everywhere. I'm at the age now where if someone says they have acid, I assume they're talking about reflux. |

I would probably leave it. If you're playing it in like a bar or something I doubt anybody is going to care or even pay attention to the lyrics that closely. I think if you leave it the way it is you should be fine.
http://dogontherunmusic.blogspot.com/ hello CD listeners, we have come to the point on this album where those listening on cassette or records will have to stand up or sit down and turn over record or tape. In fairness to those listeners we will now take a few seconds before we begin side two... Thank you... Here's side two - tom petty, 1989 |
