I've always assumed that Dave Stewart came up with the track for this, and Tom did the vocal part..
Sure sounds that way

Does anyone know for sure?

^I don't understand what you are talking about. Who wrote the song?

Or on Dave Stewart's version of the song. I'm confused. Confused

Hi Firefly,

I meant who wrote the instrumental part of the song, and who wrote the vocal melody (the vocal part)

do you know?

Dave Stewart came up with the Sitar part, the instrumentation, and the chorus. Tom wrote all the verse lyrics.

hello CD listeners, we have come to the point on this album where those listening on cassette or records will have to stand up or sit down and turn over record or tape. In fairness to those listeners we will now take a few seconds before we begin side two... Thank you... Here's side two - tom petty, 1989

Oh I'm sorry I didn't respond. There is a few pages about it in Conversations. Apparently Tom and Dave were running around in rhinestone cowboy outfits during the "coming up" with the song.

Looks like quite a few people got involved. It's a great story but I'm not going to type it up here. Wink

Definately a joint venture. Not you do your thing and send it to me then I'll add mine. lol

I guess it was a song for Stevie Nicks, is what kicked the whole thing off.
