Does anyone think that this is a CLASSIC and that he missed the boat by not releasing it as a single?

Cheers,

i really love Crawling Back To You. he probably didn't release it as a single 'cause record companies don't normally release that kind of a song as a single. They release the rockin rollin upbeat stuff. But that song is truly a gem. ALL the songs on Wildflowers are gems but to me that song is just so deep. The music is so deep and wonderful. Tom's singing is great on it too. It's just one of those songs that only true fans are lucky enough to get a listen in on it and truly appreciate it.

I flipped when they did this on tour last year. Certainly, one of my personal highlights from all the times I've seen the band!

In my mind it should be a classic too. Easily one of my all time favorites by Tom.

They love it, like you love Jesus, It does the same thing to their soul

Love this song, listened to it twice on the way home from the gym tonight. I love the line - most things I worry about never happen anyway and I'm so tired of being tired. I can relate to both of these sentiments. It must be my age!

I completely agree. I also just LOVE how Tom sings, "he was drunk and I was sick". The way he says drunk always makes me smile.

Yeah Crawling Back to you is one of my favorites on the album, Wilflowers is truly an amazing record. I love the way he follows Crawling with Wake up time.

I insist Wildflowers was one of the finest rock albums from the 90's, the best written at least. Crawling Back To You is a work of art from a wonderful artist, it is a really deep cut, if I can use that term, the music is superb and the delivery of the lyrics is later period Petty at his best.

------------------------------
Honey don't walk out I'm too drunk to follow
You know you won't feel this way tomorrow
Well, maybe I'm a little rough around the edges
Inside a little hollow
I get faced with some things sometimes
That are so hard to swallow
Hey hey hey!

I was born a rebel
Down in Dixie on a Sunday morning
Yeah with one foot in the grave
And one foot on the pedal
I was born a rebel

Wildflowers is a particularly meaningful album to me for many different reasons, and like many of you I believe that every song on this album is a gem. That being said, Crawling Back To You seems to stand out amongst the others as something special. From the start, with the flute intro and those first powerful piano notes, its clear that this is not your typical Petty song. The music is simply beautiful, and Petty's brilliant verses of vivid imagery are delivered perfectly. The lyrics, especially the last verse, describe a feeling that I can strongly relate to ("I'm so tired of being tired... Most things I worry 'bout, never happen anyway").

I am disappointed (though not surprised) that it never gets airplay, but I was lucky enough to see it played live at my first ever Petty concert last year at the Gorge (in my opinion, one of the most beautiful amphitheatres you can imagine). I will never forget that day. He introduced the song by saying something along the lines of "I thought maybe this one might sound good on a night like tonight, knockin around out there in the wind..." I remember thinking that it was funny because I hadn't noticed any wind at all. It must have been about 80 degrees out that night, but when I heard those first few notes, I could feel a chill running down my spine. I looked around at my friends, who were only casual fans and had never heard the song before. They were speachless (which for them is quite the achievement) as it seemed was everybody else. Everyone seemed to just be standing there, staring, entranced by the song and marveling at the brilliance of the man who had crafted it.

A classic indeed.

Yes, I do think it's a classic. I think it's probably the most creative song they've ever done. I can't think of any other songwriter who could write a piece of art like this.

Crawling Back To You is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. I had to good fortune to hear it at my first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert. I was a casual fan when I went and so I kind of forgot about the song. I went back and looked at the set list and decided to listen to it, and I absolutely love that song. The whole album is great, but I think that it is the best song off of the album.
His lyrics remind me of my life and they mean a lot to me. That's why Tom Petty is the greatest song writer of our time.

You were the one who took me in,
You were the one thing I could count on,
Above all you were my friend." -TP

Does anyone notice the flute like sound right after the false start? I can't figure out what insrument that is. I'd even say that it sounds like some other song played in reverse. Turn up your headphone and listen closely!
