Price-wise yes but given the amount of material that will be included in this box set, I'm wary about having it sent through the mail. Part of the appeal of such a package (at least for me) is the packaging itself and it looks like the band has gone through some lengths to see that this set was done the right way.

I'd be very upset to find my box damaged in any way due to problems with the postal service. I know a couple of friends of mine recently ordered stereo/mono Beatles boxsets off Amazon and they arrived damaged...some of them are still in the process of shipping them back/getting replacements etc.

There is also the question of whether or not the box will be at my doorstep on the release date. I seem to recall waiting a very long time for RDAD to arrive between release date and the date it was in my hands...so long in fact that I decided to bite the bullet and get a copy from BEST BUY while I waited.

I know a lot of people for some reason are adverse to buying from a chain store but when we are talking about this type of package, personally I wouldn't want to put it in the hands of the postal service.

Where do you see this, JohnMill? I glanced through all the reviews and I only came across one about Stevie Nicks.

I should rephrase...They are very critical of "Insider" one review saying "It is only the doomsaying Insider where Petty was joined on stage by Stevie Nicks that a gloomy note is struck. Has stardom taken its toll?"

I don't know I just thought they would've regarded the Nicks collaborations more favorably. It seems like they are either non-plus about the whole thing or at times critical claiming that the Nicks collaboration was a low point of the show.

I had the same problem of waiting a long time for bestbuy.com to send me RDAD. That was another product sold exclusively at Best Buy. When you pre-order from the superhighway website, you are ordering from Warner Bros. I'm not sure if that will make any difference as far as the delivery date.

The price reduction is worth it for me. I save $50 + bestbuy.com's shipping cost. It costs me the price of the superhighway tour, but I'm having lots of fun with that. I think joining the tour is worth it, esp. if you pre-order the deluxe box set.

Well to be frank, the TP.com shop or whatever its called from what I understand (having never ordered from it personally) has had it's fair share of screw ups over the years as well.

People ordering shot glasses and receiving bandannas instead or the wrong t-shirt stuff like that. Now I doubt they would screw up to that degree with this "Live Anthology" but I could totally see some people ordering Deluxe editions and getting standard editions sent to them by mistake.

Actually though again my reservations have less to do with Tom Petty Shop and more to do with the postal service...a box set with this many different parts, (the box itself, cds, dvds, posters, memorabilia) I think you are just asking for trouble having something like that sent through the post.

The pre-ordered deluxe set is through Warner Bros., not Fanfire, which sells the tompetty.com stuff. And you're right; people have had lots of trouble ordering from Fanfire. I've never gotten the wrong thing, but I had lots of things go out of stock after I ordered, or things taking too long to ship.

I understand your concern of damage during shipment, though.

Excellent points, JohnMill. Although as it happens I got the Beatles stereo boxed set from Amazon, properly packed and in perfect shape, and it arrived on the Saturday after the Tuesday release. Obviously with an LP in the pack though, the TPATH deluxe boxed set will be bulkier and possibly more susceptible to shipping damage than The Beatles CD boxed set.

And if I had to make a guess, my guess would be that Best Buy will sell the deluxe boxed set for $99. Retailers love to advertise $99 pricing, and I could imagine them putting the $99 banner in their newspaper circulars. Thus making the $150 list price somewhat bogus, but a way for fans to think "Hey a $150 list price item for $99!".

Regarding the packaging of the deluxe set, I'm going to guess that it will be in the shape of a boxed set of LPs. Maybe the size of the George Harrison 3LP "All Things Must Pass" boxed set (if anyone remembers that) or slightly thicker. With the LP at the bottom, the CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs spread out above the LP, and then the printed materials on top of that. So this may be somewhat bulky, but maybe not too bad.

Oops - correction:

That's $20.00 more than the price on the superhighway preorder.

They could use a little more product info. Wink

From the site:

"Credits

Performer Petty,Tom & Heartbreakers"

What more do you need to know? LOL!

Seriously, I'll bet they just didn't get the fancy marketing copy yet or something. If not, this must be some kind of 'zen' marketing technique -

Or maybe there is a golden ticket in one copy, and they just have not announced the contest yet.

Lets see... the winner gets some crazy TP&HB related prize - maybe you get to meet the band, and listen to every recording of Refugee they ever made.

That could take a while.

At any rate, I'm guessing that Best Buy item description will get updated eventually. Once they figure out what it is they are selling Smile

You know, I love TPHB and if this was a new album or something akin to Playback with lots of new material, I'd do the pre-order, but I've heard all these songs 1000 times and it's hard for me to get excited about recycled songs in a new package. Don't get me wrong - I'll buy the deluxe set and it will be nice having a true anthology of live material - but I may wait until the after Christmas sales or even pick one up on eBay.

Same deal with the Beatles remasters. I was really excited about them but now I'm like "eh, I'll just borrow my dad's and rip them." Yoko and Paul don't need anymore money.

Is it just me, or is the price for this set just really, really high? I love Petty and have all his albums, but sorry to say that I am priced out of this one for a long while. And I have probably bought all his albums on the first possible release date. Waiting is the hardest part, and Ill be waiting on this one for a bit I think.

Not really considering what you are getting - Take a look at the graphic SIF uploaded - its obvious that a lot of hard work and thought went into making this "deluxe edition" into an attractive package. There is always the standard edition which will retail around $20 if you choose not to go the deluxe route.

Thanks Sings! Yeah, that's quite a lot right there. $120 sounds about right, and it would be even better for $99 if MysteryMan proves right. With a cheap, hand-me-down laptop from god-knows-when that's incapable of little else than surfing, the Super Highway Tour would be a waste of time and $3 for me, also especially since I hate previews -- I want it all at once on the release date, so it's like Christmas.

Yep, I think it's a bit steep, too.
