Don't know if this has been posted, before.
Scroll down a bit and listen to Tom Petty's commentary. http://www.spinner.ca/2009/10/...e-live-audio-commen/ |

TP sounds a little different there. I guess it's because he's older, though his voice does not sound "older", just different. My favorite officially released TP commentary will probably always be "Hello CD listeners..." on the Full Moon Fever CD. You believe what you want to believe.... I'm not thrilled with the selections either. It seems like a lot of covers and a lot of selections from the Gainesville show that was on RDAD. I think there were even a couple from the SoundStage performance at he Vic and most of the originals have already been on PUTP or Take the Highway.
I suppose you're not going to get the general public to buy this if it was all obscure material though, so I can't fault them for the tracks they chose. It's got to be tough to please the insane fans like us and the casual fans that probably make up 98% of the buying public. With that in mind, I'm a little surprised by the Disc 5 selections. My guess is that only the die-hards will buy the deluxe boxed set over the regular boxed set, so disc 5 should be particularly geared toward the die hards. Yet on disc 5, only "No Second Thoughts" is a rare, non-cover song that the die-hards would especially appreciate. There's also "Too Much Ain't Enough", but that's less rare, and it's also on the bonus DVD of the deluxe set (same song, from the same concert). The way I see it, people who buy the deluxe boxed set over the regular one are paying about $100 (ABOVE the regular set price) to get the 1978 "New Year's Eve" DVD and disc 5 of the deluxe set. Sure they also get the Wildflowers documentary and the recordings in Blu-Ray format, but I would think that those are lesser attractions for most fans. So $100 for essentially one DVD and one CD is a lot; I'll buy it anyway because TPATH has always given me more than my money's worth in the past, so in this case if I pay a little more that's ok by me. But I'm a die hard fan; I don't think the casual fans will make the same decision. Therefore, disc 5 should probably be more geared to die-hard fans than it is. Overall, I'm still not disappointed with the 5 CD selections, in fact I think they did a pretty good job. Sure I could have done "better" to suit my own desires, but I don't know if it would have been better for everyone. I agree that there's too much from the Gainesville 2006 show and too many covers, then again there could have been even more covers (consider the VERY high percentage of covers on PUTP, on the live songs on Playback, on Soundstage, etc.). Maybe I had somewhat low expectations for the choices, but overall I think they did well. Still, I think disc 5 of the audio CDs should have been made more with the die hard fans in mind than the casual fans, since I'd guess that 99% of the sales of the deluxe boxed set will be to die hard TPATH fans. Eh I'm not that impressed with this package. But then again I'm a hard grader and understand the need to cater to the general public as well as everything else that has been said here already.
I'll wait until the set is released to give my complete thoughts on it and I DO HOPE it sells well as maybe it means more archival sets like this in the future which would be nice. |

Strange that there is not a single song from the 1989 or 1991 tours.

It could be argued that the band was at it's vocal peak then too with Tom still in fine voice alongside Howie and Scott. I was disappointed to learn they included a version of "Free Fallin'" from 2005. TP hasn't been able to sing that song properly onstage for well over ten years now due to the fact he can't hit the high notes anymore. |

from nick,
for me it is really hard to understand a live anthology covering 30 years and the following songs are not included: listen to her heart change of heart into the great wide open yer so bad you got lucky face in the crowd walls don't do me like that love is a long road i won't back down regular version learing to fly regular version stangered in the night ok this is probably a personal favorite how can that be when you have 62 tracks including the deluxe version, way too many covers, put those 10 or 11 songs on there and it really becomes a live collection for the last 30 years |

even though I've been in the Bay Area most of my life, I've never been to a concert at the once legendary Cow Palace. I'm going to go to some rave-dj-drugfest there on October 30 just to check out the venue, because its such a classic ~"The Internet is not a big truck. The Internet is a series of tubes." Sen. On your first three, I disagree. I love "Anyway You Want It" "...this is a song Benmont wanted to do tonight, it's a real old song, it's done by the Dave Clark Five, I hope you like it..." I also love the handful of Let Me Up selections from '87 concerts. I think that was the biggest surprise for me, as I haven't heard any of that. Not the biggest fan of "Think About Me", but I like that a live version of this was included here, to mix this up even more. I do agree fully that the version of "It's Good To Be King" is a poor choice, as is the saturation of the '06 Gainsville show. Especially since us fans inundated ourselves with this show since '07. It's not a bad show, but for something like "It's Good To Be King" an older selection from the '90s -- a little bit more uptempo and with more Mike solos battling Tom for the spotlight -- I think would have been a lot better. I think the only tracks that are necessary from that Gainsville show (if we're adamant about including it) are "I'm A Man" and "Southern Accents". For the other songs, there are better versions elsewhere.
Absolutely. I was hoping for that one. Thanks for posting those clips. Finally, To Nick... I think I speak for the majority of the board when I say thank God they didn't make this a mostly Greatest Hits affair. I like a lot of those hits, and I like some of them live, but we hear a lot of those elsewhere, and I wouldn't trade ANY of the deep cuts (but maybe a cover or two) for any of those. They put together something pretty interesting, especially for those who are not well acquainted with the boots, and we should encourage the interesting part. "I want Michael to do this song. This is a dance craze that's sweepin' my brain, you know...uh [pause]...I have dance crazes that occasionally sweep my brain." - Tom Petty, 4-11-99. |

After looking the list over, I totally agree with this. I wasn't expecting a "HighGrassDog's personal favorites deep cuts" track list, so I'm grading on a curve. But choosing so much from 2006 seems lazy to me. There are much better versions of IGTBK and RDAD than from that tour. I would add "Mary Jane's Last Dance" to that list. There are much, muuuuch more interesting versions of that song, particularly the long jammy version from late 2002. That's my biggest complaint with the selections. Besides, the 2006 Gainesville concert has been issued on DVD already anyway. Some other thoughts: I would have liked to see "King's Road" also, and more from Echo, though everyone knew going in that Tom would slight that album. "Billy the Kid" is nice, but "Swingin'" really should be on there. -"The Last DJ" isn't a particularly gripping live track. -Some good deep cuts. I'm happy to see "Driving Down to Georgia," "Lost Without You" and "Melinda" on there! Very little ITGWO- how about the title track or "Two Gunslingers"? Very little Long After Dark also. I personally couldn't disagree more with those who don't like this track listing. Holy COW I can't wait to give this a listen!!!
And for what it's worth - there is no way they could put all the songs on here that I'd want to hear. Lots from Fillmore 1997 but I was there in 1999. So - yeah - I could wish there was a song or 2 from that but I can't really even think of that when I read what's on there. ~We are God's own Masterpiece, We are God's Love song.~ |

Yeah, overall I think they did a good job. Again, I wasn't expecting exclusively deep cuts, or all my favorite songs. And you knew Tom would make it very covers-heavy, and very Echo-light, so nobody should be surprised by that. The only thing I'm really disappointed by is the 2006 heaviness. You have a ton of covers from that tour, plus versions of IGTBK, RDAD and MJLD that I believe are inferior to other tours. Picking all that stuff from '06 still seems lazy to me. (And of course most of that was released already with the RDAD DVD.) ---- I watch that fortune wheel but never get to spin it, You make me promises but I don't think you mean it. |
