Live review: Works Progress Administration at Largo at the Coronet

The low-key supergroup moves effortlessly through folk, rock, pop, country and soul selections in a satisfying sampler of the octet's self-titled debut album and some evocative covers. Judging by the looks of things, the band onstage Monday night at Largo...

Ugh - just finished reading - it hurts my heart that I can't be at shows like this...

My comments regarding the following:

"Judging by the looks of things, the band onstage Monday night at Largo at the Coronet was not the most professional of operations.

One of the singers flubbed so many lyrics that he felt compelled to make a joke about his misfiring synapses. A guitarist broke a string and disappeared for almost an entire song. And the notion of tucking in one's shirt? Apparently outlawed by majority rule."

As for unprofessionalism, I'd MUCH prefer a more relaxed performance by some of music's most seasoned veterans who are able to laugh at themselves - over an uptight, if I miss the lyrics or break my string I'm gonna cry or pitch a fit kind of outfit any day of the week.

---If it were not for Tom Petty's album "The Last DJ"...it's entirely possible I wouldn't be writing songs today. That album completely changed my life. After hearing it, I knew from that day forward I wanted to write songs.

I went to this show, and it was a lot of fun. I didn't mind Glen messing up the lyrics here and there and Sean running off when he broke his string, it added the the whole experience. Relaxed performances are great.

Bonnie, don’t believe all you read should be the mantra. Sean Watkins also broke a string and left the stage in Atlanta after about two songs and left with an attitude; sounds like its all part of the 'stick' and think the LA Times needs to go to more shows by WPA! Gotta agree with the 'wild one, forever' the lyrics and body/face reactions on a couple of songs are GREAT….the audience and the media need to pay more attention to WPA Cool

Hm. Saw them in NH and it didn't happen there. If it did I didn't notice.

What I DID notice was smooth harmonies and lots of picking, fiddling and fun! I loved them!!! Ben liked the way that Sean can pick and strum at the same time! Ha! Ben had a chance to ask him about it and Sean was very nice and told him what to do.
