Hey all, I´ve been lurking for a few days on my net book.
Now I will write some of my feelings and please feel free to respond! 1) Like I stated earlier, I am a little disappointed by the setlist. 2)I will buy the anthology when it comes out in November and I will definitely blast the CD´s in my car. I WILL ENJOY THEM! 3) Like many have stated, some songs are just repetitive ( mostly all the gainesville 2006 and the Fillmore and Chicago shows) 4) How long will Tom deny the fact that ECHO WAS A STRONG ALBUM? I hope one day he reaches down in the pit of his heart and realizes that some of his best material lies in ECHO. IMO the lyrics in Echo are unmatched. From Rhino Skin, to Echo, to Swingin, to Counting on You, to Billy the KID..... JUST A GREAT ROCK ALBUM! Deep lyrics and good music. 5) IN REGARDS TO ITS GOOD TO BE KING... IMO this is a must for a LIVE CD but a definite NO for a greatest hits II. How can some of you Petty lovers deny the EXTENDED JAM that Campbell and the boys play in this song??? There are so few extended tracks during his shows( Last Dance, GLoria, and maybe YDKHIF are the only that comes to mind ) THis song for me is PINK FLOYD, This song for me is QUEEN. This song divides the average live performers from the GREAT ONES! ON A LIVE ANTHOLOGY BOX SET, THIS SONG CANNOT BE DENIED! 6) Some deep tracks ( and when I say deep, I mean songs released on any album that was not a single ) should have been included instead of the many covers found. These covers are great, Im thinking that Gloria, and maybe two more should have been on there. At the end of the day, I am buying a PETTY ANTHOLOGY not a COVERS ANTHOLOGY! 7) For those that say that they are happy that PETTY didnt turn this into a Greatest Hits live Anthology.... Let me get this off of my chest. If you are making a 5 cd box set, you can definitely choose all the hits on 2 cds and have 3 other cds with NON HITS! Then this would satisfy the average Petty fan who owns 1 or 2 albums and would satisfy the die hards! For example, I am not a huge fan of LISTEN TO HER HEART. But everytime I hear it live ( and often in concerts Petty opened with this song ) I fall in love with it! There is something to be said about live music. So for Tom not to include this song in the Live Anthology is a mistake! This has been a live STAPLE for years! In Conclusion, ( and I might add some stuff as time goes on ) let it be known that I am a huge Petty fan. Last night I watched the Gainesville show and had goose bumps on my arms during certain songs. HOWEVER, This setlist is average at best when you consider the HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of songs that they have made in their 30+ years of music! Again, feel free to respond, CHEERS TO ALL! from nick,
you are dead on, i joined the superhighway tour, but this box set to me is a downer, yes i know there is some great stuff on there, but when you realize that there are 62 songs counting the deluxe version and songs like, you don't know how it feels, yer so bad, listen to her heart, face in the crowd, you got lucky, into the great wide open, don't make the cut is ridiculous, i could add many others, but again it is a live anthology of your career and these are the songs that made you famous, if it were a two or three disc set i would say ok, it's a covers thing again, but 62 songs and about 25 of these songs shouldn't be on here, oh well, the only thing i can think of, is that there may be a continuation of the internet tour, there are fans who don't have all the bootlegs and for once would like a complete live hits cd release, this is far from that |

One thing I kept in mind - I don't know if Tom and the guys were thinking the same, but they may have been - is the live TPATH performances that were currently in print prior to the release of this set. So while "Listen to Her Heart" may not be on the new set, it was already available in two performances: on the "High Grass Dogs" (1999 San Francisco) DVD, as well as the RDAD concert (2006 Gainesville) DVD. Also, four songs from "Echo" ("Room at the Top", "Swingin'", "Free Girl Now", and "I Don't Wanna Fight") were also on the 1999 DVD. Although that same logic makes the inclusion of "Mystic Eyes" in the new set somewhat baffling, as this was on the Gainesville 2006 DVD AND the Soundstage Chicago 2003 DVD, and it's a cover, and - well, I don't recall it being a fan favorite.
I do think it's a bit too bad that some of the longer songs weren't included; "King's Road" as I mentioned, maybe also "Dog on the Run" (although a full performance of "Dog on the Run" is in the RDAD film, making inclusion of it in the boxed set less necessary), possibly "You Don't Know How It Feels" (even though that too was on the 1999 DVD, and the Soundstage 2003 DVD). Though personally I'm glad that "Gloria" with the long "funny" story in the middle was not included, I'd rather have 3 other TP authored songs than that one, in the same space. At some point - probably after we've actually heard the live anthology set in its entirety - we should each list our own choices for CDs 6, 7, and 8, maybe 9 and 10 also. Those wishing to jump the gun can start thinking of possibilities now. I can think of a few off the top of my head, from the 1987 Jacksonville radio show (or elsewhere if better) I'd have likely taken "Runaway Trains", and from the 1989 North Carolina radio show I'd have taken the cover "Bye Bye Johnny" and "The Damage You've Done"... and we know they must have access to those radio show recordings. I'm gonna save my comments for after the set is released but "Dog On The Run" is included in the deluxe edition. It's on the live leg LP alongside "Fooled Again", "Luna" and "Jaguar & Thunderbird". Also the best version of "Gloria" is the one from the Fillmore when TP convinces Gloria to go out with him by offering her TP&HB tickets.
There is already a bootleg set out there with every original composition TP&HB have ever performed live that was put together a few years back in a noticeably similar manner as this new "Live Anthology". I believe it came out to nine discs total although I'd have to dbl. check. |

Excellent point. I forgot about the 1976 Paul's Mall Boston version of "Dog on the Run", on the LP included in the boxed set.
Interesting. Also interesting is this entry in Wikipedia, regarding the upcoming live anthology. Maybe this has been mentioned on the message boards before; if so I didn't see it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Live_Anthology The above link includes the entry: "In 2008, Ulyate began going through Petty's live archive and created an iTunes library of 170 concerts with a total of 3,509 performances of 400 unique songs. 'I made sure Tom and Mike heard every song they ever did,' Ulyate said, 'And I ranked the concerts with a star system.'" Wow, so they've got 170 concerts (from which these songs were taken), presumably professionally recorded to some extent. How about that for the ultimate live release, all 170 concerts on Blu-Ray audio (I don't know how many Blu-Ray discs this would involve, maybe 50?). Plus of course all the filmed or televised concerts, also on Blu-Ray. And no I don't currently have a Blu-Ray player, but I'd have a great reason to get one. You believe what you want to believe.... That quote is from the preview of the boxed set in Rolling Stone. Here is a link to the article: Rolling Stone preview of The Live Anthology Boxed Set |

Thank you Sings, I hadn't seeen that RS article, it's interesting. And the Stan Lynch quip about "Surrender" reminds me of one on the Oxford 1980 ("Rock Goes to College") concert video, where "Stories We Could Tell" is being introduced. At that concert, Tom was saying something like "We've never done this song before... and..." at which point TP seems at a temporary loss for words, so Stan jumps in and says "and we might never do it again!". I don't know if the audience could quite hear Stan's line there, because it wasn't as loud as Tom's, but Tom clearly heard it and laughed. Those were the days.

^I have a copy of that on DVD, and it is funny. It's hilarious when Tom is trying to introduce Luna, but the crowd is too loud, and Tom yells at them to shut up! (For some reason, that amuses me. I can't imagine him doing something like that today.)

Here are my thoughts on the Live Anthology Setlist:
1) Mary Jane is perhaps his best jam song live. The version he chose for this anthology is a short one similar to the radio version without the extended jams that make it such a great concert song. This decision is extremely disappointing. 2) Some obscure tracks, not too many hits. This is very good. 3) Too many tracks from Soundstage and RDD Gainesville concert. 4) Overall it is a better setlist than I expected to see and I am particulary pleased that Drivin Down to Georgia is included. I do hate to be negative but I must reiterate that the choice for Mary Jane's Last Dance was just horrible. I |

I never realized that MJLD was the short version.
Wow, that sucks. Good Point Spike! |

100% in agreement. I've said it a few times also- the MJLD choice was very disappointing to me. ---- I watch that fortune wheel but never get to spin it, You make me promises but I don't think you mean it. |

Wow - you guys are a tough audience. Don't we already have a long version of MJLD from the "Live At The Olympic" DVD? I haven't watched it in a while, but I'm thinking that version included the jam at the end.
And isn't MJLD also on both "High Grass Dogs" and the Gainesville 30th anniversary show? This will be at least the 4th live version commercially released. That song seems to be pretty well covered. |

Also a good point Tom Fest, however its not just this one song that some ( like me ) seem to be disapointed about! But...I think that when you have a great thing like the GREAT JAM in MJLD, that is something to stick with. That is the beauty of a live show. And on the TOUGH CROWD comment... I dont think so. It might seem that way, but without thoughts and opinions, whats the point of this board. Like I said before in my statements, I dislike the album version of Listen to her Heart, but I love the live version! SO anywho, thanks for your opinion TomFest! GO PHILLIES, FUCK THE YANKS! |

That is a good point, TF. However, I would add that the 2006 Gainesville version of MJLD was also released on DVD, more recently. So if they've both been released, I'm picking the better (and slightly rarer) version, the 2002 jammy one, for this project. ---- I watch that fortune wheel but never get to spin it, You make me promises but I don't think you mean it. |

I'm not saying I wouldn't change a thing, but there are a great number of things to be excited about in this deluxe set. Like many of you, I already have a bunch of this on bootlegs and legitimate releases, but the blu-ray disc with 5.1 audio is going to be spectacular. There are a number of fairly rare tunes. Getting "Nightwatchman" right out of the gate was stunning. And that DVD of the 1978 New Year's Eve show absolutely has me drooling. Can't wait.
Once we've digested all of this, we'll just come back and ask for more! :-) Yeah, that's it - volume 2 of The Live Anthology. Sounds good. |

And you know what, I agree with all this too! I am really happy about "Nightwatchman", "Friend of the Devil", "Drivin' Down to Georgia", "Lost Without You", "Melinda" and the '78 live DVD, among other things. Yes I'm disappointed about a couple things (certain song choices, MJLD, lack of Echo/LAD, etc.), but there is still plenty of stuff to look forward to. ---- I watch that fortune wheel but never get to spin it, You make me promises but I don't think you mean it. |
