Does anyone know what piano Scott uses? Besides the obvious (digital, upright, etc). What brand is it? It's certainly a large piano that's somewhat seldom heard. Scott does more guitar and everything else than piano.

True.
First let me say that I don't know the answer to your question. Here is my guess: He had a favorite console that he keeps in that ancient favorite cabinate. The band has dubbed it the Thurstiphone or some equally silly name. New expensive keyboards don't excite Scott, and because he's heavy on the vocals, harmonica and guitar, he sees no reason to change what he's got. Neither do I. Very glad that he now performs in front of it from time to time. Fifteen years ago, it appeared that he was hiding behind it. That was a shame. |

Good guess. It seems logical, but who knows? I like seeing him behind the piano. It makes him look like a hard-worker. Trying to do it all at the same time. But when it comes to it being heard, I barely if never hear it. Great looking cabinet, though.

"Makes him look like a hard worker". Well! There ya go! What a wonderful use for an instrument. But....did it ever occur to you that we both could be wrong? Maybe there is no keyboard....but a tiny TV set with a satellite hook-up to the dish on the bus. The TV could broadcast latest PGA scores and standings...with hourly updates from Tiger Woods on the Womens' PGA.
At your next show, watch Scott's expression very carefully. It might not be "hard working" so much as "ultimate golf pleasure". |

^ LOL!
Somehow I highly doubt that Scott is focusing on anything other than the music during the performance (and I believe you were joking of course). Scott is working waaaaaaay too hard to be distracting himself with the bass fishing channel or whatever! But I do remember staring in disbelief at the 2008 MSG performance as some fat cats were led in to special box seats where (I $hit you not) little built in TVs were turned on and tuned to some kind of sporting event DURING the performance. Yes, below our seats sat three three guys in suits in a special box area - one older gentleman and two younger guys. The younger guys seemed to be enjoying the show but were trying hard not to display 'excessive enthusiasm' in front of their boss who appeared to have taken them there as some kind of business perk. The boss seemed more interested in the sporting event. Now, Hell may be described in a myriad of ways, but going to a TP&HB show, having great seats, and not being able to fully enjoy the show because you are afraid that your boss might freak out over your enthusiasm seems an apt description to me. And so, if that was some kind of job interview I say that isn't the kind of place you want to work! Crazy in love with Rock and Roll. |

Count on Relic to take our discussion to a "whole nudder lebel".
I'll bet the was a CA show. But, in 12 years it could be Boston. And I'm sorry, but this goes back to the thread on Bailouts where Exo reared the word "greed" Any executive ensconsed in a premium box, watching TV is 1. rude. 2. too rich. 3. greedy. (Oh, and Relic, can't any concert goer pick up the latest game on his cell phone these days? Or ipod? Probably a little less obtrusively.) Let's look at entertainment today: Recall Seinfeld? George didn't just want to have sex with his girlfriend, he wanted to have sex while eating an Italian sandwich and listening to something entertaining. Let's talk about Hugh Hefner. One beautiful girl? Why no, he requires three. All at the same time. And eveyone bows. Pictures on the wall indicate that so many icons have visited his bliss. Bill Clinton....separate trip: Hillarly. Heff consinders it a stamp of approval apparently. (Power to him. Its a free country. I don't care to make his acquaintance, thank you.) Excess. A little is nice. A lot will ruin it. A bit more will expose you for the toad that you are. And a lot? Well...that will hopefully kill you. While hopefully making an example of some type. I know Scott works hard. I don't need the details of his keyboard situation. Not only does he sound good, he looks good. And he's fun to watch. And he's got quite a musical history. Around here, we have a place called The Musical Wonderhouse. If you had to animate that place and put it in the person of one, I think Scott would be a good candidate. |

Well you know, I never really thought much what was behind Scott's box.

You haven't? What do you think about, Girl?
One of the best things Tom did was get Benmont's permission to set up piano cameras. You can't play several sets of keys, hauling on them in a percussionary way, and as a customer, NOT be able to see. (Aggravation! Makes you want to rend your clothing and bite somebody) I don't need to see Scott on camera. I can basically see what he's doing. And, at this time of the year, I'm sure Relic is right....there is no television there. Instead, I suspect its a small writing bench with his Christmas card collection, as well as cards he can quickly dash off when Benmont is smiling at all those cameras as he solos. |

I was down front this year but right in front of Ron. So I watched him for a while but that it was rude to stare. I could not see Tom, Mike or Benmont they were way way way over to the other side of the stage and Steve was covered with a cymbol. So what do I think about... I usually watch the guitars because I never mastered the instrument.
However I was watching Ron and Scott so I guess I was thinking that box is nice but it's in the way. ha ha ha Then I watch the crowd. You guys are pretty entertaining. Way off the subject I had a man with his son sitting next to me at the McGuinn show and they both had they latest and greatest computer phones and the father was worried about the game. Fortunately they obeyed the rule and shut them off for the show. How rude those people were Relic. Or just backwards. Watching sports was OK during the show but emotion wasn't. How twisted. ************************************** Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits (Bo Diddley) |

"Rude to stare".
But if you make it to your appointed seat at the concert, why not stare a little bit? I paid a goodly sum to watch them...not necessarily the crowd. I am there to stare. (I usually scream and carry on, but since some musicians don't like that, my options and ways to amuse myself dwindle.) Scott's "furnature" appears to have some age on it. What do you think the vintage and history of it is? |

I have no idea. I think someone said it was an antique music stand.
It looks more to me like one piece of the front of a choir stand. It certainly has traveled many miles. I guess the stare thing comes from my Victorian upbringing and transfers somehow to where ever I am. I couldn't really see the carving on the box though. From afar it just looks really pretty. ************************************** Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits (Bo Diddley) |

It seems like a pretty big box to lug around that's seldom used, but I guess it looks good. Also, have any of you noticed Scott's amps are tuned way down on the commercially released videos? You can only really hear him when he's playing by himself, without Tom or Mike on guitar, but when I watch audience shots of concerts on Youtube, I can hear his guitar work quite clearly.

Sometimes I think Scott is like a Mina Bird!
Singing the parts for Dylan, or Roy Orbison etc. And the harp work, too (just to name a few of his amazing talents) Somewhere I saw a photo of him that was taken during the 2006 tour.... He is singing his brains out, and playing guitar, and on top of that 'piano' sits an array of harmonicas and guitar picks...... Get six musicians of his caliber together and they could take over the music world! (Oh wait, they already have Crazy in love with Rock and Roll. |

^And so there you have it!
Scott Thurston is part of the reasons TPATH has taken over the world. Nothing more to be said. Last one to leave, please turn out the lights. |

I think scott's "piano" is just a fancy holder for all his other gear. I can't remember one time seeing him play the piano. But it seems I have caught glimpses of mics and harps and effects pedals sitting on there.

Well we want him outside the box!
On opening night 2008, I sat to the side of the stage and there were work stations with computers. It looked like I was walking into a NASA room or something similar. lol ************************************** Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits (Bo Diddley) |

Maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him playing whatever was behind that Thurstiphone.
