..and who isn't? Here's a tasty little treat - a solo performance from Benmont of an Irving Berlin tune named How Deep Is The Ocean

Ben on piano and vocal. We don't get to hear Ben by himself very often, do we?

I assume this was done at Largo. Did you record it?

Largo has such a strict and well disclosed no audience electronics policy that I am really surprised to discover this recording.

Don't know why I bothered to mention this except that - to me - Largo seems to be quite a special place (To many others as well it seems). A sanctuary for the Arts, or a little Oasis of Reason.... However you might describe it Largo is a truly unique venue, so whatever their rules might be they are absolutely working to make the club one of the premiere locations to experience live performance art in an intimate (and intelligent) setting.

And so despite how much I loved hearing Benmont perform, I am a little bummed to know of this recordings existence out of fear that this kind of thing might dispel Largo's magic.

I don't really think this dispels Largo's magic. No matter what they do, there will always be someone who can get around the rules. I enjoyed hearing that since all of us do not have the luxury of getting to go to Largo and hear it live. That little snippet really shares the magic and uniqueness of this venue.

In addition to Benmont's wonderful performance, another interesting thing you can hear in the recording is how quiet and respectful the audience is. It really is a very special place and the Artists sure seem to appreciate performing there.

There is a video clip from Largo on Gillian Welch's myspace page that includes Benmont on piano. You can't see him, but you can hear him. Sean Watkins and Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek are also there. I guess they're all regulars at Largo.

Relic, a few more Largo recordings are on archive.org, and really, since I don't live near Los Angeles and I am an amazingly avid Benmont fan, they really make me smile quite a bit. Smile But their rareness makes Largo seem even more "mysterious" and special. Smile

For anyone going to Largo, be sure to get there a little early so that after they let you in you can have time to wander around the courtyard and check out the amazing photography and sculptures.

Some really stellar stuff there. Don't miss it in all the excitement of the performance Smile
