Here is the link for the Rolling Stone piece. (It couldn't be further off topic for this thread, sorry). I think it would be so difficult to live in a shadow that huge.

We should start a 6 degrees of Tom Petty thread (like the Kevin Bacon game). For example Anna Gabriel is mentioned in the Rolling Stone, Anna's room mate in college was Adria Petty, Adria being Tom's daughter = 3 degrees. I'm just being silly. . . .

Do you recall that song...? (My senility is showing again.) Something about: she was a child of the stars. Grew up with Sonny & Cher, Dennis Hopper...(Man, I can't think with Eric Clapton crooning in my ear...) was a lullaby? She was all messed up and kinda falling apart in this bar?
Anyway...it's a good song and kinda addresses this.

All of a sudden it just popped into my head! Its Shawn Mullins, Lullaby

she grew up with
the children of the stars
in the hollywood hills and the boulevard
her parents threw big parties
everyone was there
they hung out with folks like
dennis hopper, bob seeger, sonny and cher

now, she feels safe
in this bar on fairfax
and from the stage I can tell that
she can't let go and she can't relax
and just before
she hangs her head to cry
I sing to her a lullaby, I sing
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
rockabye

she still lives with her mom
outside the city
down that street about a half a mile
and all her friends tell her
she's so pretty
but she'd be a whole lot prettier
if she smiled once in a while
cause even her smile
looks like a frown
she's seen her share of devils
in this angel town

But, everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
rockabye

I told her I ain't so sure
about this place
it's hard to play a gig in this town
and keep a straight face
seems like everyone here's got a plan
it's kind of like nashville with a tan, but,
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye

everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye
everything's gonna be all right
rockabye, rockabye,rockabye, bye, bye
bye, bye

Yes, and if I'm lucky, I'll be seeing Shawn tomorrow night. He's quite good live.

How about Abe Laboriel, Jr.? He is really a power drummer.

Honey, just when you think you "get it"...think again!

Reminds me of the (oh crap...drum fingers on desk top) John Hyatt song that goes "just when you think (you've seen it all), the bearded lady comes and does a triple back flip." -Buffalo River Home

Beware smugness!

Oh, and yes, I'm sure other people have held drumsticks. Different styles. Tito Puente banging on a kettle... I just like Steve Ferrone. To each his own. I just really really like him. ...A lot.

It'll be good to see Steve on the upcoming tour again.

I've seen some drummers just hold their sticks like two clubs and do very well. Not everyone who is talented is allowed in life to be taught. They just seem to know how to do it.

I remember Stan saying something about counting. Didn't he say at that point when he left that he had not learned how to do that?
